The Okavango Delta is one of Africa’s most beautiful and unique wetland areas. While it abounds with a multitude of wild animals there is no doubt the biggest single attraction is the lion. Africa’s most feared predator, the lion is at the top of the food chain and this reason alone is enough for the adventurous types to spend a little time in his domain.

For most, seeing a lion close up and personal means a visit to the local zoo but while it is still an invigorating experience, seeing and feeling a lions presence in the wild can only be achieved via an african lion safari. Lions today have found it difficult to survive outsde of large conservation areas and programs are currently in place in the Delta to monitor and study their progress.

Dangers On An African Lion Safari

Guided tours are a wonderful way to travel through a lions domain to see these magnificent beasts in their own habitat. While the dangers on a guided tour are lessened there are still some tips for beginners to take heed of. A friend on a recent tour in South Africa experienced the fright of his life when he came close to being confronted by a group of female lions. Always the exhuberant one and who shall remain nameless here, he was travelling in a guided jeep through a lion conservation park and despite continual warnings about not leaving the vehicle, decided he wanted a photo of a male lion who just happened to be a little further away than his camera lens could focus on. To cut a long story short,he stepped out of the vehicle and only a few steps from it, before the guide noticed a group of three lioness’ moving in a stealth like motion towards the jeep. Just as well he turned around when he did, and saw my hapless friend outside the jeep and completely unaware he was being stalked. Bottomline… a needless tragedy averted.

It’s vital to listen to your guides on an african lion safari. Make no mistake, despite their dwindling numbers in the wild they still rule as king of the beasts. If you think you’re up to an african lion safari, visit your local travel agent for more information and take it from someone who knows, it will be an experience you’ll savour for a lifetime.

Hot Air Balloons – Full Of Romance And Adventure

If you are a romantic at heart or perhaps an adventurer then let me tell you that hot air balloons are for you! Just imagine yourself and your special partner soaring high overhead in the early hours of the morning or at dusk watching the sunrise or the sunset while sipping champagne in a beautiful balloon. Ahh.. Now doesn’t that sound lovely? Imagine the breath taking views as you hold hands and savor the moment together.

These balloon rides are so popular these days that many people even get married in them. Now that’s romantic! But of course hot air balloons are not just for the romantic but many adventurers enjoy this experience also. I mean it is an adventure to be flying in the air in a basket with only a hot air balloon holding you up there. An Adventure it may be, but I assure you it is safe. Things have come a long way since the first balloon had taken to the air in 1783. Passengers have changes since then as well seeing the first passengers were animals!

Not much has changed other than that though as you still use a basket, a burner and a balloon or envelope. The burner is used to utilize propane gas to fill the balloon with hot air so it can rise and obviously the basket is to transport people. The driver regulates the propane gas to allow him to control going up and down. Unfortunately the weather plays a major part in ballooning and an expedition may be cancelled if the weather does not suit. It will also make a difference with where you land and this is one of the reasons why you have a chase crew following you. This chase crew will be there to collect the equipment and the passengers once the flight is over.

Hot air balloons have become so popular that now there is even conventions where ballooning enthusiasts from all over the world collectively get together and show off their creations. You will see the usual style amongst many different weird and wonderful shapes and designs. And of course they all work extremely safely as well. It’s a great place to take the family to share in this experience.

If you are interested in taking a flight in one of these fabulous machines then check out your local area or check out somewhere where you would like to see and find out if there are any hot air balloons doing business there. Make sure the controller has all the qualifications needed to fly, as there are strong regulations that have to be followed these days. Ask about your rights if there are cancellations because of weather problems before paying.

Once you have decided to go through with a ride then remember to take your camera or video camera so you can record everything. Take a coat incase it is chilly up there and sunglasses and a hat are always a good idea. Remember, once you are up there you can’t run back to the car to retrieve something that you forgot. So make sure that you are organized so you can really enjoy the experience of a lifetime.

Deep Sea Fishing Tips

Deep sea fishing is a wonderful and extremely enjoyable activity. Here are some tips that will make your salt water fishing adventure even better.

1. Watch the signs.

If you see birds e.g. Seagulls that are feasting on small bait-type fishes, there are probably larger game-type fish below the surface of the water. Also, look for floating wood or debris. In most cases when you chance upon a large floating wood, you would find a large game fish in the area even encountering dolphin.

2. Stop, Snook and Listen.

Fishing for snooks is quite similar as fishing for bass. Snooks like to be around ledges, posts and rocks.

3. Crabs for full moon.

During full moons use soft crab imitations as bait. That’s the time when crabs shed their shells and stripers come looking for them.

4. If you’re looking for tunas, find the dolphins.

Yellowfin tuna are usually found schooling with dolphins. So if you see a group of dolphins, chances are there are some tuna in the area.

5. Cut and Burn.

If you have trouble cutting through a spiderwire braid, try using a lighter or a match.

6. Good Reef.

The best place to fish is near reefs since big game fish feed on fish that live on reefs.

7. The Circle Hook.

Use a circle hook if you would like a higher hook up ratio. These hooks guarantees more catch, because of the minute gap, and the reverse point. They are generally better for the fish since they do not hook in the gut just the lip.

8. Don’t have sea legs.

Watch the horizon and stay on deck. These would generally help you if you’re having trouble with sea sickness: Stay away from the boat fumes, breathing it only exacerbates the problem.

9. Anchors away.

When your anchor is stuck at the bottom, try attaching a float to it. Return after the tide has changed in direction. This should be enough to loosen the anchor.

10. Fish where the fish are.

A lot of fisherman have the idea that they should be catching their live baits over the reefs before going to deep waters. If the live baits are not in the area you’re planning to catch the larger games, then why would you come up with the idea that the large fish are there. Wouldn’t they be in the area where the bait fish are?

One of the best things about deep sea fishing is the huge range of fish you can target, including cod, haddock, wolf fish, Pollock, halibut, tuna, cusk, shark, swordfish, sailfish, marlin, rockfish, dorado and wahoo. If you want a good all round bait for deep sea fishing, then use live ballyhoo.

Also, you should keep in mind that there are several endangered varieties of fish to avoid during your adventures. Due to the high levels of commercial fishing, species like the spiny eel and the onion-eye grenadier are nearing extinction.

Favorite African Safari Destinations And Safari Preparation

Posted: under Safari.

Taking an African safari is an exciting holiday choice for many people however, given the nature of such an adventure, there is a required amount of due diligence to perform before you actually take off for the wilds of Africa.

Okavango Delta
Image by Shelby PDX via Flickr

I want to briefly highlight some areas of interest in this article which you will be able to expand on further by conducting more research or talking with your travel agent. So what part of Africa do you want to visit?

Botswana Safari

For sheer contrast in landscapes Botswana is the ideal candidate. From the dry arid lands of the Kalahari desert to the rich, life blooming Okavango Delta, Botswana offers many options. Because of it’s tremendous contrast, Botswana is a perfect choice for first time safari seekers. It has a deep history and and the choice of safaris range from mobile to fly ins.

Kruger National Park

Undoubtedly Africa’s best known safari destination, Kruger has been officially in existence since 1926. Set in South Africa and formerly known as Sabie Park before being expanded and re-named more than 80 years ago, Kruger has been a safe haven for many animal species due to the threat of over hunting. Since being opened to visitors, Kruger has drawn visitors to it like a magnet however, there are certain codes of etiquette you’ll need to observe.

Kenya Safari

Kenya has been described as the “grand daddy” of African safari destinations because it is the birthplace of the traditional safari. Like Botswana, it offers plenty of diversity in both landscape and fauna. The Masai people are almost legendary around the world and the safari options are numerous. One of the favoured safari tours is the Gorilla tour. However, think of an animal in Africa and it’s likely to be in Kenya… elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, cheetahs… all you’ll need is good working camera.

Tanzania Safari

Tanzania would just about be this author’s favorite safari destination. Tanzania is East Africa’s largest country and as a history student, it conjures up images of a rich, exciting and sometimes violent past. What it has to offer both in landscape and fauna is quite staggering… Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti, wildlife and some amazing national parks. In fact, if it’s wildlife you’re interested in then Tanzania is pretty hard to beat.

These are just four areas on the African Safari trail well worth considering however, throw “into the mix” safari destinations in Namibia, Zambia, Mozambique and Zimbabwe plus consider short term safari options to major landmarks and areas and you begin to appreciate that vastness that is Africa.

Are there any dangers? Well sure, but tour operators are extremely over zealous about the safety of tourists that this almost doesn’t become a concern. Preparation for an African Safari is of the utmost importance and not only will you need to do homework on the intended area of visit but there is a little matter of “housekeeping” to perform as well. What to take? Clothing;light or heavy, personal care items, passports, money, sunblock treatments: your tour operator will be able to give you a shortlist to consider before leaving the country. The latter just about becomes the most important part of the trip because if you get it right, then your African safari experience becomes a whole lot more attractive.

Biking Down Haleakala Volcano

Posted: under Biking Down.
Tags: , , , ,

If you are interested in a little physical activity while vacationing in Maui, you should consider biking down the Haleakala Volcano.

There are close to ten different companies that are available to book biking tours that head down the volcano. The prices charged and the experiences offered during your biking tours will be different. Before you book your Maui biking tour down the Haleakala you should inquire about what you are paying for and what type of rules or regulations there will be for the tour.

For example, some tours will pick you up at your hotel and others will have you meeting at their place of business or on the Haleakala volcano. It is important that you are aware of these things before you make any decisions by booking a tour.

Cruiser Phil’s
Cruiser Phil offers two tours that have you biking down the Haleakala Volcano. The first tour occurs at sunrise allowing you to see the sun come up over the horizon in a dazzling array of colors. It includes a continental breakfast and a chance to stop at a restaurant, Paia’s, at the end of your ride for some excellent food. This trip is $135. The second trip is the morning trip and offers no real difference other than the price of $120.00. In either case, you receive a helmet, windbreaker suit, motorcycle jacket, insulated gloves, and all the equipment needed to enjoy a safe ride.

The Haleakala Bike Company
Averaging about $80 a trip, Haleakala Bike Company offers Maui biking tours at a slightly lower cost than the competition. The reason for this is they do not pick you up, drop you off, or offer you any type of food or beverage. They do offer excellent service and an exciting time though. Haleakala differs from other biking companies because this company does not make you stay with the pack. If you want to speed down the volcano, you are free to do so. On the other hand, if you want to make an entire day of your trip, you can do that, too.

Maui Downhill
Maui Downhill offers a number of different tours for biking down the volcano. Each tour offers transportation to and from various hotels and resorts and all the equipment you need to have a successful biking expedition. Many of the tours allow for admission into Haleakala National Park, continental breakfast, lunch in Kula Maui, and photos to remember your trip. Maui Downhill tours generally range from $100 – $150.

Maui Bike the Volcano
The Maui Bike tour begins as you watch the sunrise from on top of the volcano. You are picked up from your hotel and taken up to the summit. Coffee and continental breakfast are offered with your tour. You will be given all you need to successfully enjoy a biking tour, and then your tour will really begin. You will be traveling 38 miles downhill. You will be able to enjoy a small groups that allows for more instruction from the guides should you need additional help.

These are just a few of the tour companies that offer biking tours of the Haleakala volcano in Maui. If you are unsure which company to go with ask the employees at the resort or hotel where you are lodging. This should help you to find out a good company with a tour that is acceptable for you and your experience level.
